ManaSota-88 has spent over 50 years fighting to protect our environment. We are a 501.c3 non-profit organization, incorporated
in the State of Florida. We are dedicated to protecting the public's health and preservation of the environment.
Created in 1968, ManaSota-88 evolved from a major environmental health study sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service,
Florida State University, the University of Florida and the Sarasota and Manatee County Commissions. Our commitment to safeguard
the air, land and water quality is aggressive and uncompromising.
ManaSota-88 volunteers are unpaid. A steering committee provides overall leadership and direction. We operate entirely
through volunteer support. We receive no contributions from the government or special interest groups.
ManaSota-88 does not accept contributions from any polluting industries. Private citizens contribute 100% of our operating
revenues.ManaSota-88's attorney is the only person who receives compensation.
Over the past few years, ManaSota-88 has helped strengthen rules to prevent other cities from dumping sewage sludge in
our community. We have worked to reduce the amount of toxic pesticides used in our schools. In land use, ManaSota-88 has prevented
changes in zoning laws that allow increased density in residential areas and fought to control urban sprawl. These are just
a few of the critical issues in which we have been involved in.
Members of ManaSota-88 and our attorney are continuing to work to improve local land use decisions, water and air quality
rules. We follow and comment on many proposals to issue permits to pollute and on dredge and fill projects.
We are proud of our involvement with county, state and national government. We are absolute proof that one organization
can still make a difference.
